Enhancing Artes in Tales of Arise.
Arte Usage (術技使用回数 Jutsu-Waza Shiyou Kaisuu?, "Magic/Arts Usage Count") is a recurring concept in Tales series. It is a system that allows to improve artes depending on the number of times an arte was used.
Function[]
In the beginning, arte usage was a base for learning more powerful arcane artes that were combination of two weaker ones. In later titles, arte usage evolved into unlocking additional effects for artes, e.g. more hits, increased area of effect.
A common feature includes ability to carry over arte usage count into New Game Plus with Grade Shop, although not every title that has Grade Shop has this option available.
Appearances in Original Titles[]
Tales of Phantasia[]
Arte usage made its first appearance in the original release of Tales of Phantasia where Cress Albane was required to Deadly Skills a set number of times before being able to be able to buy their combined versions of arcane artes from various non-player characters.
Tales of Eternia[]
In Tales of Eternia, Reid Hershel is required to use Special Skills a certain number of times as well as have his Slash and Thrust levels at appropiate levels to unlock their upgraded forms as well as compound skills. The same system is used for Farah Oersted where she is required but instead requiring appropiate Punch and Kick levels.
Tales of Symphonia[]
In Tales of Symphonia, it is known as Usage in the Techs menu and Tech Usage (使用回数 Shiyou Kaisuu?) in the Grade Shop. Usage is tied to learning new techs which requires the user to have used a tech a set number of times, be at a certain minimum level, and be leaning into one of two tech branches, either Strike (single-target focused) or Technical (area-of-effect focused). Additionally, if a character has used a tech a certain number of times and deals elemental damage with their normal attacks with the aid of certain weapons, accessories or Sheena Fujibayashi's Sylva and Tethe Seals these techs alter into their elemental variants which often have higher damage multipliers than their non-elemental base versions.
Tales of Legendia[]
In Tales of Legendia, Senel Coolidge, Chloe Valens, Moses Sandor, and Jay can learn Arcane Eres by using associated Base Eres 50 times and attaining a minimum level associated with the Arcane Eres in question. Compound Eres also require using each component eres 50 times.
Tales of the Abyss[]
In Tales of the Abyss, the physically-focused Luke fon Fabre, Guy Cecil, and Anise Tatlin, and Asch learn several of their arcane artes as a result using associated base artes at least 50 times and being at the required minimum level.
Tales of Vesperia[]
Similarly to Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Vesperia allows physically-focused Yuri Lowell, Repede, Karol Capel, and Judith to learn several of their arcane artes as a result using associated base artes at least 50 times and being at the required minimum level. It is also the first title in the series to associate arte usage with improving the arte, e.g. Yuri's chance to inflict Guard Break on the enemy with Lone Wolf Charge steadily increases after using it at least 50 times or as Rita Mordio uses Fire Ball it gains more fireballs when cast.
Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2[]
In Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2, arte usage is no longer used for learning arcane artes like in many previous titles, but uses the approach established in Tales of Vesperia and accumulating arte usage improves on artes' current effects, like increasing action speed or area-of-effect.
Additionally aside of each arte having its own changes based on usage count, there is also a common upgrade pool shared among all artes, the details of which are summarized in the table below:[1][2]
Tales of Zestiria[]
In Tales of Zestiria, the more an arte is used, the higher its proficiency level is. The proficiency determines several things, including:
- BG recovery at the start of battle. It is calculated as the sum of all of the character's artes' levels divided by 4. In a favourable encounter, the BG recovery is doubled, while being at a disadvantage will cause the recovery to be nullified.
- Reduction of SC consumption by .
- When using a mystic arte, recovers user's BG equal to .[3]
Tales of Berseria[]
In Tales of Berseria, the arte usage determines a character's proficiency in each arte, similarly to Tales of Zestiria. Depending on the number of stars acquired among character's learned artes, a certain amount of BG will be restored at the start of battle, with 200 stars equaling to recovery of 1 BG. Additionally, in a favourable encounter the BG recovery is doubled, while being at a disadvantage will cause the recovery to not occur. Also the effect of the Decreases SG cost of artes based on their ☆ level improves as the user accumulated proficiency in each arte.[4]
Tales of Arise[]
In Tales of Arise, each arte has a use Count. After the Count achieves a required number, a ★ will appear next to the use number and up to five stars can be earned. Each ★ results in the arte growing stronger.
