Beast (獅子戦吼 Shishisenkou?, "Lion's Battle Howl"), also localized as Force, Chi, and Lion's Howl, is a classic technique in the Tales series. This is one of the most well-recognized melee artes in the series, appearing in most of the games in the series, as both a swordsman arte and as an unarmed fighter technique.
Arte Description and History[]
When this arte is activated, the user slams the target with extreme force, creating a blast of energy in the astral image of a roaring lion's head, which forces all nearby non-heavyweight enemies to be blasted away and knocked to the ground. This is an effective arte to clear mobs when surrounded by many enemies because of its power and force. It is usually one of the first artes that a character acquires that can cause enemies to be knocked down. Each character that uses the arte also has their own unique version of executing it, all ending with throwing the lion energy.
In the Super Famicom version of Tales of Phantasia, Cress Albane charges enough distance to clear the entire area before thrusting his sword forward. The lion in this version is orange. However, this arte fails to activate against heavyweight enemies as Cress requires to push enemies before unleashing the blast of energy, if used, Cress pushes his enemy in vain, barely stopping their movement. In later installments, Cress's execution for the arte is greatly altered. The running is reduced to charging forward with his left leg as he strikes with his right shoulder and uses his left hand to throw the lion head.
By the original Tales of Destiny, the color of the lion is changed to light blue, which would become the standard color throughout the series. Stahn Aileron moves his left arm behind him before thrusting it forward to release the lion head. Mary Argent attacks the enemy with her entire left arm, starting with the shoulder then the elbow, before firing the lion's head with her hand. Force is one of the artes that the dummied character Lilith Aileron can learn in the original version, if a glitch or cheating device is used to add her to the party. However, she loses this arte in the later versions.
In Tales of Eternia, Chi is used to activate the Divine Skill Maximum Burst, allowing it to be used as a combo finisher. It is one of the easiest Divine Skills to activate, requiring only for Chi to connect with the enemy, before extending it by pressing the Attack button at the correct moment. Additionally, in Tales of the Abyss, the arte can be used within a complete Wind or Light FOF Circle to transform it into Thunder Beast.
In Tales of Symphonia, Presea Combatir has a significantly more powerful version of this arte than Lloyd Irving, now officially localized as Punishing Beast after the release of Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. Although this arte was also localized as "Beast" until recently, both artes are considered to be completely different attacks, with different names in Japan. Additionally, in the Remastered edition, despite retaining the same execution and shouts of Shishisenkou, in the Japanese version, Celsius, Magnius, and Farah have their banners display the kanji of Punishing Beast. The English releases retain the original "Beast" localization.
In Tales of Zestiria, Lion's Howl is passed down through the Platinum Knights of the Rolance Empire. Sergei Strelka and Boris Strelka are the only living people who are capable of using it until Sergei teaches it to Sorey. Heldalf, who as a human was once captain of those knights, also knows the arte and has an improved version called True Lion's Howl. In the final climatic battle, Sorey and Heldalf clash their Lion's Howls and come out even, but Sorey then follows up with a Lion's Howl with his other hand and catches Heldalf off guard to defeat him once and for all. This scene is the basis of the Shikou Dousouha battle mirrage arte in Tales of the Rays, and later on, becomes a mystic arte in Tales of Asteria.
In Tales of the Rays, Marcus Grimm performs the arte by swinging his weapon like a baseball bat.
In Tales of Crestoria, Farah Oersted's Upbeat Battler unit has 40% chance to inflict Debilitated on her target for two turns while Gaius's Dawn on the Battlefield unit deals two less hits and has 100% chance to inflict Dispel on his target for three turns. On the other hand, Stahn Aileron's Energetic Soul unit's is 44% weaker and cannot inflict status effects but has a shorter cooldown by two turns.
In Tales of Arise, Kisara quickly spins counterclockwise before releasing the lion head from her shield. If activated while guarding, Kisara will include a shield bash in the beginning, which would be in her variant of the arte in Tales of the Rays.
In Keroro RPG: Kishi to Musha to Densetsu no Kaizoku, Dororo can obtain this arte as he shares a Japanese voice actor with Cress.
In the Japanese files of Tales of Graces, there is a voice clip of Asbel Lhant using the arte. Due to the similarity with Bestial Roar, he does not have access to it in the final version. In Tales of the Rays, however, he uses the variant Shishirekkou.
