In the Tales series of games, a characteristic genre (ゲームジャンル Geemujanru?, "Game Genre") is a genre label that, in addition to labeling the games as role-playing games, illustrates a particular plot theme or noteworthy aspect of the game. Both Mothership and Escort Titles frequently possess a characteristic genre.
Description[]
The concept of a characteristic genre derives from the idea that each Tales game is a unique experience not shared by any other game in the role-playing game genre. To reflect this, the developers create a new type of "genre" where each game would belong, defining its main focus and theme as part of its genre. The Tales game placed within each genre becomes the sole representative of that genre category, placing emphasis on the individual value of each game independent of others in the same series.
The characteristic genre is used in Japanese advertising as part of the main points of interest for each Tales title, alongside each new variation of the Linear Motion Battle System and the Japanese voice actors involved with each release. The characteristic genre also provides the Japanese public with a phrase that can be considered to be the Japanese title of each new game, as if it is translated from the otherwise foreign titles prefixed with "Tales of ...", to enable comprehension for those who are not significantly exposed to the English language.
Once each game is localized, however, the characteristic genre is simply dropped and unreferenced in any media, which prevents each genre name from being translated officially. As a result, all localized Tales games are simply treated as Japanese role-playing games without any differentiation between them or with other series. The first game to break the trend is Tales of the Rays, which features the characteristic genre on its website. Release materials for the localized version of Tales of Crestoria uses a tagline similar to a characteristic genre that is unrelated to the Japanese one.
In Tales of Link, shortened versions of characteristic genres appeared as passive abilities on certain units whose artwork featured the cast of that game, and those passive abilities received translations.
