Climate change is a recurring plot element in the Tales series. Games where elements and/or elemental spirits are an important world-building aspect feature drastic changes in environment.

Description[]

In Tales series climates are associated with elemental energies and spirits that govern them. Often a disturbance in elemental balance, typically caused by an event that alters physical realm, may result in drastic climate changes that threaten life in areas they encompass.

Appearances in Original Titles[]

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World[]

After the worlds of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla were unified as one at the end of Tales of Symphonia climate across the world started to get extreme. Six months prior to the start of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Marta Lualdi and Tenebrae set out on a journey to stabilize the climate by searching for and hatching cores of dormant Centurions who governed mana distribution prior world split.

Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2[]

In Tales of Xillia, Rieze Maxia is the subject to various unique climate locations known as "spirit climes". It results in some drastic area appearances, like Fennmont being covered in eternal night. As spirit climes are result of the schism covering the continent, they cease existence at the of the Tales of Xillia when the barrier is dispelled.

As climate depends on the existence of spirits, the world of Elympios is largely a wasteland due to the use of spyrix technology that kill spirits.

During the events of Tales of Xillia 2, Jude Mathis is tirelessly working on replacing spyrix with spyrites. Ludger Will Kresnik and his friends have a peek at world where spyrites exist via the fractured dimension F41DB.

Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria[]

While Tales of Zestiria is the first title released in the duology with Tales of Berseria serving as its prequel, the resurrection of the four Empyreans and Laphicet becoming Maotelus and replacing Innominat are evident. By the start of Sorey's adventure the realm of Midgand with its many islands reformed into the continent Glenwood as the result of tectonic plate movement. Along with this change many areas also had climate shifts, e.g. Perniya Cliffside Path's autumn-like climate becoming the more temperate Lakehaven Heights with likely the most extreme change being the green Burnack Plateau becoming a desert known as Zaphgott Moor.

Tales of Arise[]

In Tales of Arise, Dahna was a planet full of evenly distributed astral energy of Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, and Light elements. However when Renans invaded the planet 300 years prior the start of the story, they enslaved her people and divided the world into "Five Realms", each with its own elemental focus and a Master Core to collect it. This has result in some drastic changes, including scorching desert of Orbus Calaglia, the Realm of Fire, the snow-covered sunless Cyslodia, the Realm of Light, and extremely rainy Ganath Haros, the Realm of Water.
