Mage (魔術師 Majutsushi?), also known as the Wizard (ウィザード Uizaado?) and Witch (ウィッチ Uicchi?), is a recurring job class in the Tales series.

Job Characteristics[]

The Mage's arte list usually consists of attack spells of varying elements with little to no support. Mages are usually physically weak but nonetheless valuable due to their strength in spells. The Mage job in most games include equipment includes staves. Their armor, like most magic-based jobs, includes dresses and robes. Standard artes usually associated with the Mage job include Fire Ball, Stalagmite, and Indignation.

Appearances[]

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon[]

In the original Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon, the "Mage" costume serves as the root of a whole family of costumes, available to both Dio and Mel. These costumes are styled after Arche Klein's wide range of magical abilities, from the basic Fire Ball to the devastating Earthquake. The costumes of this family are:

  • Mage (まほうつかい 「魔法使い」 Mahoutsukai?)
  • Flare Mage (フレアメイジ?)
  • Aqua Mage (アクアメイジ?)
  • Wind Mage (ウィンドメイジ?)
  • Earth Mage (アースメイジ?)
  • Thunder Mage (サンダーメイジ?)
  • Sorcerer (ソーサラー?) (Male only)
  • Sorceress (ソーサリス?) (Female only)
  • Wizard (ウィザード?) (Male only)
  • Witch (ウィッチ?) (Female only)

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X[]

Mel's Mage-type costumes use pure offensive magic, contrasting the mix of offensive and supportive magic of the Sage-type costumes. The costumes of this family are:

  • Magical Girl (魔女っ子 Majokko?)
  • Witch (ウィッチ?)
  • High Witch (ハイウィッチ?)

The Great Mage (大魔術士 Daimajutsushi?) costume is also thematically similar.

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2[]

In Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2, the Wizard and Witch are a series of costumes for Julio Sven and Caro Orange, respectively. Arche Klein's costume is based on the Witch, and Dhaos's is based on the Necromancer. To obtain a Wizard or Witch requires giving a costume the Alchemy Proof (れんきんじゅつしょ Renkinjutsu-sho?) root item to get the Wizard or Witch of the same element.

The costumes of this family are:

Physical: Wizard (ウィザード?)
Witch (ウィッチ?)
(Male only)
(Female only)
Fire: Flare Mage (フレアメイジ?)
Wind: Wind Mage (ウィンドメイジ?)
Water: Aqua Mage (アクアメイジ?)
Earth: Earth Mage (アースメイジ?)
Lightning: Thunder Mage (サンダーメイジ?)
Light: Enchanter (エンチャンター?)
Enchantress (エンチャントレス?)
(Male only)
(Female only)
Dark: Necromancer (ネクロマンサー?)
Elemental: Wizard Lord (ウィザードロード?)
Witch Lord (ウィッチロード?)
(Male only)
(Female only)

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3[]

The process of costume synthesis is greatly streamlined in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3, merging all iterations of the Wizard and Witch costumes into these two base forms, one for each gender. To obtain the Wizard and Witch costumes, both Julio and Caro must combine their respective Mimic costumes with the root Black Robe (くろのローブ Kuro no Roobu?). Genis Sage and Druaga of Tower of Druaga fame both have their costumes based off of the Wizard, and Arche, Reala, and Ki from Tower of Druaga are based off the Witch.

Tales of Eternia Online[]

The Arcane Craymel Mage (魔晶霊術士 Mashourei Jutsushi?) was one of the starter classes, specializing in offensive spells. The male versions were modeled after Keele Zeibel.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology[]

The Mage appears a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology as one of the starter jobs available at the beginning of the game. The job is involved in the requirements to unlock the Magic Knight and Bishop jobs.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2[]

The Mage reappears a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 and is again available from the start. The Mage streamlines its available artes by removing some spells. It is involved in the requirements to unlock the Magic Knight and Bishop jobs.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3[]

The Mage reappears a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3. Its spell list again features minor tweaks. The job is involved in the requirements to unlock the Magic Knight and Bishop jobs.
