Dragon Swarm (爪竜連牙斬 Souryuu Rengazan?, "Clasping Dragon Chaining Fang Slash"), originally localized as Dragon Blade, is a traditional sword strike arte in the Tales series.
Arte Description and History[]
When this arte is executed, the user makes a chain of several wide slashes, moving forward with every strike. This is a damaging and deadly attack that is not easily avoided by grounded enemies. The implementation of this attack varies based on the character and game, where, in Tales of Eternia, Ras uses it as a chain of seven frontward slashes, while in Tales of Vesperia, Yuri Lowell makes four wide slashes with kicks placed between each slash, whereas Flynn Scifo, in the X360 version, makes three green slashes, then winds up, ending with a single wide slash. The PlayStation 3 and Definitive Edition versions changes it, however, as Flynn does two wide slashes, bashes with his shield, then makes two more slashes. This version has blue effects, using a playable character's attack trail and making it more similar to Yuri's. There is also a skit arguing over the differences between Yuri and Flynn's shared artes, where Flynn says Yuri's Dragon Swarm is more of a Dragon Sweep (爪竜連牙蹴 Souryuu Rengashuu?, "Clasping Dragon Chaining Fang Stomp").
The original Tales of Destiny features the same animation of Dragon Swarm for both Stahn Aileron and Leon Magnus, which involves a series of four slow slashes, but the PlayStation 2 remake version of the game differentiates the styles of the two characters. Stahn performs an upward slash before spinning clockwise for another upward slash, then down, then another upward slash followed by a clockwise spin. Leon on the other hand slashes downward with his dagger, then slightly hops up as he slashes upward with his sword, before he performs a horizontal double slash midair, then an upward sword slash as he spins clockwise. The Director's Cut version of the remake also introduces aerial capabilities for Leon's version of the attack, though it is animated the same way using the float mechanics of the game's aerial battle system.
In Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave, Stahn's variant is changed to a down-leftward slash, followed by an upward slash, to another down-left slash, before an up-right slash as he hops and spins clockwise.
In Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2, Alvin slashes in a down-left angle, then spins clockwise to fire his gun, then continues spinning for another down-left slash, before shooting again, then performing a rightward slash. He can alter it into Dragon Salvo with his Charge special ability. Gaius performs an upward slash, then steps forward for a down-right slash, steps forward for a left slash, then stabs forward. He can also extend into a downward slam. This can be achieved in Tales of Xillia 2, when the Second Artes skill is equipped, and the Artes button is held down. Wingul performs a down-right slash, down-left, up-right, down-left again, then right.
In Tales of the Rays, Stahn's variant is changed again to an upper slash, a downward slash, an upper slash with a hopping clockwise spin, followed by a final upper slash. Ras's version has him perform a down-right slash, a down slash, right, then up-left. In addition, this can be extended for a down-right slash, a down slash, then a jumping upward slash, similar to his original variant. Gaius's stab has a blast of red energy included.
In Tales of Crestoria, Alvin's Always on Target unit inflicts Dispel on the target for three turns while Flynn's His All in This Sword unit deals twenty-two more hits, is 90% weaker and decreases the target's ATK by 20% for three turns. On the other hand, Yuri's A Peaceful Twilight unit deals three more hits, is 45% stronger than Alvin's but it cannot inflict status effects and has an increased cooldown by one turn.
In Tales of Arise, Alphen performs an up-left slash, then up-right, down-left, then up-right again.
In both language files of Tales of the Abyss there are voice clips for Dragon Swarm used by Guy Cecil. The same can be said for Richard in Tales of Graces. However, neither character has access to this arte in the final version of any game.
