Vortex (ToD PSX)

Vortex as it appears in Tales of Destiny (PSX).

Severing Wind (断空剣 Dankuuken?, "Severing Air Sword"), originally localized as Vortex, is a classic Wind-elemental arte in the Tales series.

Arte Description and History[]

In the original Tales of Destiny, the user spins around once, creating a cyclone of wind that hits all surrounding enemies, before slashing upward while jumping into the air. In the PlayStation 2 remake, this is capable of being performed midair. In their respective transitions to 3D, Stahn Aileron spins on his right leg, whereas Garr Kelvin spins on his left. In Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, Stahn adds a midair spin after the upward slash.

Earth Divide (ToE)

Earth Divide as it appears in Tales of Eternia.

In Tales of Eternia, this attack appears as Earth Divide. It can be used when Spiral Attack is used at the precise moment that the spell Cyclone is cast by either Keele Zeibel or Meredy, depending on which of the two has Sylph in their Craymel Cage. Earth Divide represents one of four Team Skills that are activated through the use of a melee arte from one character and a spell from another character cast at the same instant, combining both into one powerful elemental arte. Also, although it is named only in the Japanese version, this attack is used by Garr Kelvin during Meredy's Destiny summon.

The arte appears in Tales of Symphonia, localized as Decisive Slice when it is used by Garr Kelvin during the final team battle stage at the Meltokio Coliseum. In the PlayStation 2 and subsequent versions of the game, Zelos Wilder obtains the ability to use this arte in place of Light Spear, if a Wind-elemental property is added to his attack through the use of the Opal accessory, the Sylva Seal: Wind arte, a Wind-elemental weapon, or the Green Quartz item, and if Light Spear has been used over 200 times. In execution, Zelos lifts his left leg up as he swings his sword from behind his back, before jumping off his right leg as he spins counterclockwise. In both language files of the game, there are unused voice clips of this arte being used by Kratos Aurion, who does not have access to this arte in any final version of the game.

In Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave, Zelos dashes forward as he jumps off with his right leg.

Severing Wind (TotA)

Severing Wind as it appears in Tales of the Abyss.

In Tales of the Abyss, Guy Cecil slashes upward as he performs a jump, spinning counterclockwise, as waves spiral outwards. Severing Wind creates a mid-level Wind FOF Circle, which can be used strategically to create an FOF Change with other attacks. Additionally, the arte can be used within a complete Fire or Light FOF Circle to transform into Searing Gale. In the Japanese Nintendo 3DS port of the game, Van Grants's Senkuuken arte is replaced with Dankuuken, despite its animation remaining that of Senkuuken. The English version of the game keeps its name as Shining Blade.

In the PlayStation 3 and Definitive Edition ports of Tales of Vesperia, this arte is available to Flynn Scifo. However, it is represented differently, as a diagonal slash toward the ground with his shield as he steps forward with his left leg before jumping into the air with an uppercut slash. This version of the attack lacks the typical Wind-elemental property and surrounding cyclone, making the attack visually similar to Fang Blade from other games, despite lacking any relation to this arte. Flynn's version of this attack can be contrasted with Yuri Lowell's Severing Fang arte, which shares a similar name in both Japanese and English versions, but follows a different style of execution, much like their differing variations of Dragon Swarm. The localization chooses to reflect the lack of Wind-elemental nature with the "Severing Blade" localized name.

In Tales of Graces, Richard spins counterclockwise on his left leg before switching to his right leg to spin a second time. He then steps forward with his left leg, and performs the upward slash, spinning counterclockwise again before landing.

In Tales of Xillia, Wingul, spins clockwise on his left leg before hopping halfway. He then jumps and performs a counterclockwise spiral.

In Tales of Zestiria, Sorey holds his sword in both hands as he spins clockwise on his left leg, before switching to his right to spin a second time. He then switches back to his left before pushing off for a jumping upward slash.

In Tales of Arise, Alphen performs an upward slash as he hops back, creating a gust in the direction of the swing as he shifts his body around counterclockwise. He then uses the momentum to spin back on his right leg before jumping off, performing an slanted upward slash that creates a second gust as he spirals in the air.

In Tales of the Rays, changes are included in the following; This arte is Wind-elemental except for Alphen's variant, which is Fire; Sorey's version gains the Fire element at its sixth enhancement. Zelos performs a counterclockwise spin on the ground, on his right toes, before performing a jumping upward slash. Alphen adds a downward slam attack at the end, mimicking the attack pattern of Searing Gale outside of his game of origin. Additionally, this arte can be altered when used as the sixth or later action in a chain into Dankuu Senpuujin by Ras and Neppa Senpuujin by Alphen. Garr's, Zelos's, and Richard's versions can be used in the air after being upgraded, with Garr's and Richard's at level one enhancement and Zelos at level six. When Richard's is used in the air, he slashes downwards after the spin.
