Gilandor Yul Svent (ジランドール・ユル・スヴェント Jirandooru Yuru Suvento?), also known as Gilland (ジランド Jirando?), is a major antagonist in Tales of Xillia and supporting character in Tales of Xillia 2. He is the leader of Exodus, intending to use Rieze Maxia and its inhabitants as fuel for Elympios.
Appearance and Personality
In Tales of Xillia, Gilland has short silver hair with red tips combed to the back and two red bangs framing his face. He has red-brown eyes and white marks on the left side of his face. His attire consists of a black under-vest with narrow, silver, and vertical stripes, from which four blue long tails protrude. He wears a blue bolero with a black cape attached to the left shoulder, black gloves, baggy pants, and shoes. In Tales of Xillia 2, Gilland appears in a fractured dimension where, with a different social position, his style differs from the one seen in the game's prequel. He now has silver hair with fringe, lacking colored tips, and he wears a black undershirt with a red tie, a white vest, and a blue coat.
Gilland is the leader of Exodus, a group of citizens from another world called Elympios who were stranded on Rieze Maxia. He is also Alvin's uncle. They have the goal of returning home. Gilland has the further goal of enacting the Otherworld Reactor Plan to harvest Rieze Maxia for mana to supplement Elympios's lack of it. While the bulk of Exodus enact assassination attempts on Milla Maxwell, Gilland enters the employ of Nachtigal I. Fenn, king of Rashugal, and spurs of the development of boosters as well as the Lance of Kresnik.
He and a few soldiers of Nachtigal invade Sharilton and kidnap civilians for further experiments, including Milla, Elize, Teepo, and Driselle. In Fort Gandala, he has Teepo taken to the lab to extract booster knowledge and has the women wearing anklets that would kill them if they went through a certain field of light in the corridor. However, Fort Gandala is successfully infiltrated by Jude, Alvin, and Rowen. Milla pursues Gilland and Nachtigal, but the explosive anklets cripple her, and the duo got away.
In the palace in Fennmont, after Jude, Milla, and the rest of the party fight with Nachtigal, Gilland has his spyrite Celsius assassinate Nachtigal with ice. Later in Fezebel Marsh, Ivar activates the Lance of Kresnik and punches a hole in the schism, allowing Elympios's army in to enact the Otherworld Reactor Plan. Though the breach is mended by Muzét, Gilland links up with the army and attacks both Jude's and King Gaius's groups with the intent to capture Milla, but the two groups later manage to escape. Gilland returns to the E.S.S Zenethra, the headquarters of Exodus, which is assaulted by the combined forces of Jude's and Gaius's groups. After Gilland is defeated, he dies due to the complications of spyrite technology enslaving a Great Spirit, raging to the end about having to suffer for the choices made by people centuries ago that led to the Elympios's current mana shortage. Alvin retrieves his father's gun from Gilland's corpse and closes his uncle's eyes.
In Tales of Xillia 2, Gilland appears in the fractured dimension F4216, where he has captured the Great Spirit of Light, Aska, and uses it as the power source of the Oscore Plant. After discovering that the party have released Aska, he attempts to recapture him, stating that without the power that Aska provides, thousands of people would starve. For his trouble, Aska mauls and kills him.
Gilland fights with a gun, avoiding close-combat, which he delegates to to the spyrite Celsius. The two have a linked arte, which can only be initiated by Gilland. Despite his significant role in the plot, Gilland lacks a mystic arte despite some earlier major antagonists using them. While reappearing in a fractured dimension in Tales of Xillia 2, Gilland is not faced in battle at all despite other returning human bosses participating in battles against the party.
