|Game||Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World|
The Ginnungagap is a gap between dimensions that can be accessed via the Otherworldly Gate. Within it is the door that separates the human world from the demonic realm, Niflheim. The Summon Spirit Ratatosk serves as the guardian of this door, and his duty is to ensure the door does not open, with help from the power of the eight Centurions.
During their travels around the world, Mithos Yggdrasill, alongside his sister, Martel Yggdrasill, and companions, Kratos Aurion and Yuan Ka-Fai, meet Ratatosk and forge a pact with him, obtaining the "Derris Emblem" in the process. Much like his fellow Summon Spirits, Ratatosk is betrayed when Mithos decides to seal Origin and split the world into the dimensions of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla for the sake of saving his sister, and thus, their bond is severed.
However, unlike the other Spirits, Ratatosk actively shows his hatred for Mithos and his friends, placing a curse on anyone who dares to enter the Ginnungagap with the Derris Emblem. After these events, Ratatosk falls into a deep sleep. Two years prior to the events of the story, Sybak researchers, Richter Abend, and Aster Laker, entered the Ginnungagap through the aid of the Centurion Aqua. It was here where the two met with Ratatosk and attempted to convince him to reform the mana of the recently unified world composed of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. However, an argument over beliefs resulted in Ratatosk killing Aster.
- Like many of the characters and locations related to the Aselia world, the Ginnungagap is named after an important location in Norse mythology. The Ginnungagap is the vast, primordial void that existed prior to the creation of the manifest universe.
- In Tales of VS., the Ginnungagap appears as the final boss area in both Stahn Aileron and Leon Magnus's story modes. In Stahn's story mode, he faces Barbatos Goetia with Kyle Dunamis and Leon aiding him in the battle. In Leon's story mode, Richter appears and attacks Kyle, believing him to be Ratatosk.
