Hell Pyre (紅蓮剣 Gurenken?, "Crimson Lotus Sword"), also localized as Throw Sword, Flaming Sword, and Hell Fire Blade, alternatively Hell Hound (紅蓮犬 Gurenken?, "Crimson Lotus Dog") and Hell Fire Punch (紅蓮拳 Gurenken?, "Crimson Lotus Fist"), is a classic Fire-elemental arte in the Tales series.
Arte Description and History[]
When Hell Pyre is executed, the user slashes upward at the enemy while jumping high into the air, following through by tossing a flaming projectile sword or fireball down to the enemy while airborne.
In the original Tales of Destiny, Throw Sword is obtained as a prize for passing the Namco cameo quiz given by Cress Albane and Arche Klein, both characters from the preceding game, Tales of Phantasia. The use of this arte will cause the Swordian Dymlos to be thrown at the enemy, and all attacks after this are considered to be unarmed until Dymlos is picked up from the ground where he was thrown, similar to how Cress's version was portrayed although the latter's sword recovers automatically. The remake versions of this game change the effect of this arte to prevent Dymlos from being thrown, instead creating a massive disc of flame to drop onto the enemies below.
In Tales of Eternia, Flaming Sword appears when Demon Hammer is used at the precise moment that the Fireball spell is cast. The arte represents one of four Team Skills that are activated through the use of a melee arte from one character and a spell from another character, activated at the same instant, combining both into one powerful elemental attack.
In Tales of Vesperia, the arte is alternately called "Hell Hound" when used by Repede. In the PlayStation 3 and Definitive Edition port of the game wherein it is localized as Hell Fire Blade, Flynn Scifo's version has him jump backwards and toss the projectile. He can change this arte into the altered arte Fierce Hell Fire Blade when he has the Hell Fire and Crucible skills equipped.
In Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2, Hell Pyre is a linked arte between Alvin and either Milla Maxwell or Rowen J. Ilbert.
In Tales of the Rays, Replica Regal performs a different variant. He performs a flaming uppercut with his left fist as he leaps into the air, then throws a fireball from his right. During this animation, he shouts "Gurenken", which implies that he is performing a fist variant of the original Gurenken, as both the kanji for "sword" (剣?) and "fist" (拳?) spell out "ken". In Tales of Arise, Phantom Zephyr also performs an unarmed variant known in Japan as "Gurenken". He turns before chucking a fireball downward as he hops backward. In the English localization, this is known as Hell Fire Punch, with the Japanese kanji first being used in Zephyr's appearance in Tales of the Rays.
