Indignation (インディグネイション / インデグネイション / インデグニション Indiguneishon / Indeguneishon / Indegunishon?, "Indignation"[1][2][3]) is a powerful spell that has been featured in most games of the Tales series. It is famous as the first spell to be presented in the series, as the spell that Edward D. Morrison casts at the start of Tales of Phantasia. Since then, it has appeared in many later games with similar incantations and effects.
Arte Description and History[]
Generally, this spell is best described as summoning a single, massive bolt of lightning that creates a large dome of energy around its impact point, dealing Lightning-elemental damage. It is the highest-level and most powerful spell of its element that can be learned. The Indignation spell first appeared in the opening scene of Tales of Phantasia, as the spell that forces Dhaos to escape through time to avoid an almost certain defeat during the original past timeline of Aselia's history. Later in the game, Arche Klein learns it from Reisen.
Since this time, Indignation has become a standard addition to most of the Tales games, usually appearing as a standard third-tier spell. In Tales of Eternia, this spell can be used as a mystic arte, but this can be done only once in any full playthrough, during the battle with the Greater Craymel of Time, Sekundes. The resulting scene is a cameo of the opening scene from Tales of Phantasia, with the same full incantation and a duplicate reaction by Sekundes, finishing the battle with a one-hit kill. The English localization cut out Sekundes's voice from this scene, so it appears as a monologue for whoever casts the spell extension instead. Shizel can also cast the spell, with her incantation being a pun on the similarity between the Japanese words kami, meaning "god", and yami, meaning "darkness".
In Tales of Symphonia, Genis Sage is capable of using Indignation to activate the mystic arte Indignation Judgement, while Over Limit mode is active. In both language files of Symphonia, there are unused voice clips of this arte used by Kvar, who does not have access to this arte in any final version of the game.
In Symphonia's sequel, Indignation itself is used as both a normal spell and a mystic arte for Genis. It is also the Second Movement for a Lightning-elemental monster ally's Unison Attack. In Tales of Legendia, Indignation is the most powerful Thunder-elemental spell in the game, but it is not a very powerful spell overall, dealing rather less damage than most of the other Crystal Eres in the game. It can be learned by both Will Raynard and Shirley Fennes, although Shirley's version has a larger range, higher base damage, and pink hue.
In Tales of the Abyss, Indignation is used as Jade Curtiss's second mystic arte, but it is available only if a cleared save game file exists on the memory card. If this restriction is met, Indignation can be used at any point in the game, on any save file on the same memory card, if all other in-game conditions are met. It is also the arte he used to take out the Liger Queen in the animated adaptation. In Keroro RPG: Kishi to Musha to Densetsu no Kaizoku, Kururu gains this arte as he shares a Japanese voice actor with Jade. Rita Mordio similarly gains Indignation as her second mystic arte in the PlayStation 3 and Definitive Edition releases of Tales of Vesperia. She unlocks this mystic arte by re-enacting the opening to Tales of Phantasia: in the 200-Man Melee, if she casts Thunder Blade while in Over Limit 4 against the Time Traveller, when he is at half HP or below, the spell will instantly kill him and Indignation will be unlocked for future use. She has to have used Thunder Blade at least 200 times. In the both language files of the original Tales of Vesperia, there are unused voice lines for this arte. Unlike most artes, Rita manages to retain these lines for her use of the arte in the PS3 and Definitive Edition.
In Tales of Zestiria, this arte is used by the Armatized Heldalf at certain points during his boss battle. He begins charging the arte, drawing an elaborate crest in the air. If the party does not successfully deal enough damage, he will unleash a maelstrom of lightning that guarantees the party's defeat. If the party succeeds, however, Heldalf is stunned and open to special mystic artes needed to continue the story. Heldalf will attempt Indignation four times in total. In Tales of Berseria, this arte is used by Laphicet as his third mystic arte. Upon activating the spell, he floats in the air while a blue and white magical circle forms in the sky above him and a black and dark purple magical circle forms below the target. After this, two small orbs enter the magical circle in the sky and ignite a tremendous thunder to strike down and explode on the target after Laphicet releases the magic in his hand. Laphicet's use of this arte calls forward to Tales of Zestiria and Laphicet becoming Maotelus, as Heldalf only gains access to Indignation after armatizing with Maotelus.
In Tales of the Rays, this arte is a Light-elemental mirrage arte for Meredy and Edward D. Morrison, the former being a simple reward mirrage arte, the latter requiring a full incantation, similarly to Drag Slave. If Morrison is attacked however, it results in him performing Houjutsu Jikuukanshou. When used by Mercuria in Tales of the Rays: Everlasting Destiny, Indignation manifests as multiple thunderbolts scattered across a very large area.
In Tales of Arise, Indignation is the mystic arte of Ganabelt Valkyris, the Lord of Light and ruler of Cyslodia. Unlike previous entries, it is possible to prevent Ganabelt from executing the mystic arte by defeating his three clones that forms a barrier, before he finishes charging the arte. The second use of this mystic arte at low HP doesn't use the barrier to protect himself. His chant is the same used by Armatized Heldalf in Tales of Zestiria in the Japanese version while the localized chant is themed after astral energy.
In the collaboration event with Star Ocean: Anamnesis, this is Arche's Rush Combo attack. Arche is standing on her broom, flying in the sky, as she winks at the camera before summoning a red glyph with her left hand. With a smile on her face as she then spreads her arms out, the glyph turns blue and summons a bolt of lightning that strikes the enemy before enveloping them in a large ball of electricity. This attack is Lightning-elemental, and buffs all allies' elemental damage by eighty percent for twenty seconds.
In the Japanese versions of the games with this spell, the spell name has been rendered with different katakana characters throughout the history of the series. All versions of Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon use Indegunishon (インデグニション?) to represent this spell. The original Tales of Destiny also uses this same format, but the remake versions use the current Indiguneishon (インディグネイション?) form. Most other games in the series use this current form for the Indignation spell.[3] Some games use alternate spellings, such as Indeguneishon (インデグネイション?) in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2 and Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3.[2]
In Tales of Asteria, Master of Elements, Act 10, Rodyle can call Volt to use this arte under the name Volt no "Indignation" (ヴォルトの「インディグネイション」?).
