Joke weapons are a recurring weapon concept in Tales series. Their main purpose is to provide comedic relief for the player.

Function[]

Joke weapons' main function is to provide a character with an unorthodox-looking weapon for its type. Despite their unusual appearance, they tend to be rather strong weapons, putting to shame characters' starting weapons, or otherwise providing unique benefits. Their acquirement is generally tied to a feature that is exclusive to a game in which they appear in, eg. rebuilding Luin in Tales of Symphonia or dualizing in Tales of Graces.

Deck Brush[]

The Deck Brush is a recurring joke weapon, derived from Tales of Destiny. It is a reference to Stahn Aileron's first scenes in the Draconis, where he is caught as a stowaway and forced to swab the deck as punishment. The Deck Brush itself can later be found part way through the game and has minimal offensive stats but also the largest evade bonus for a standard weapon.

History[]

In Tales of Symphonia, joke weapons are tied with restoring Luin after its destruction by Desians. Other Appearances[]

Tales of Symphonia: The Animation[]

In the Tethe'alla arc of Tales of Symphonia: The Animation, several joke weapons such as the kendama Phantasmagoria, the leg guards Glory Arts, and the staff Deck Brush appear as one of the reasons the party lacked the funds to produce newer episodes and to pay for the electricity. Interestingly enough, the price of the joke weapons are 40,000 Gald each, which is the same price seen in-game at the restored Luin.
