Judgment

Judgment (ジャッジメント, Jadjimento^?) is a unique and often story-related Light- or Fire-elemental spell that is commonly associated with characters who can use healing magic, providing them with one of their few offensive options during battle.

Arte Description and History

Upon activation, this spell creates several pillars of light that strike randomly across the full battle field for a short period of time. Due to the status of this spell in certain games, Judgment is part of unique categories which do not follow the usual tier-based elemental progression for spells in those games.

Judgment appears initially in Tales of Symphonia as an Angel Skill that can be obtained by Colette Brunel, Kratos Aurion, and, in the PlayStation 2 version of the game, Zelos Wilder. The spell is also used by some angel enemies, most notably Mithos Yggdrasill, Kratos, and Zelos. Colette and Zelos can use upgraded versions called Holy Judgment and, in the PS2 version, Divine Judgment, respectively, as their mystic artes upon meeting certain conditions. In the PS2 port of the game, if this Angel Skill is used with Ray or Holy Lance during a Unison Attack, the Compound Special Attack will be Fukuin.

The arte is available for Colette after reaching the Tower of Salvation, where she learns it automatically. Kratos will only obtain Judgment if he is recruited later on in the game after the Torent Forest. In the PS2 version of the game, Zelos can also learn it as a player controlled character after using Shining Bind in battle for the first time. It will be learned after the battle automatically.

In Tales of the Abyss, Judgment represents the fifth Fonic Hymn, representing the Fonon of Fire, and it can be learned by Tear Grants. The arte is also available to the final boss after he obtains his final form. For Tear to learn the arte, the player must attend a funeral service after clearing the second run through Mt. Zaleho and before the second run through the Absorption Gate.

Despite being renamed to "Judgment" in Tales of Phantasia, God's Breath has no relation to the actual spell Judgment. The same applies to Judgment in Tales of Legendia, which is the localized name for God Press, a third unrelated spell. Furthermore, Philia Felice from Tales of Destiny has a physical attack named Judgment, known as Identify outside of Japan, which is also separate from the spell Judgment.

Although it is not a spell that any playable character can use, an unnamed spell that is similar to Judgment can be cast by an angel as a result of Patty Fleur's mystic arte Summon Friends in the PlayStation 3 version of Tales of Vesperia, which will occur if the roulette lands on the "wing" icon.
