This article is about the angelic spell and fonic hymn "Judgment". For the wind or sea-element spell that was previously localized as "Judgment", see God's Breath.

Judgment (ジャッジメント Jadjimento?) is an important story-related light or fire elemental spell that involves several random strikes of light across the full battle field. Due to the status of this spell, this cannot be considered as a typical attack, and thus it cannot be categorized under the typical spell or arte system that is used for most games. However, this is only considered in Mothership Titles; in most Escort Titles, this arte is an ordinary spell.

Arte Description and History

Judgment appears initially in Tales of Symphonia as an Angel Skill that can be obtained by Colette Brunel, Kratos Aurion and, in the PlayStation 2 version, Zelos Wilder. The spell is also used by some angel enemies, most notably Mithos Yggdrasill, Kratos, and Zelos in both GameCube and PlayStation 2 version. Colette and Zelos can use upgraded versions called Holy Judgment and (in the PlayStation 2 version) Divine Judgment respectively as their mystic artes after meeting certain conditions. Although it is essentially the same spell, this arte takes a noticeably longer time for Zelos and Kratos to cast than for Colette. In Symphonia, the arte, after being cast, darkens the battlefield and sends down fourteen pillars of light in a random pattern. In the PlayStation 2 port of the game, if this Angel Skill is used with Ray or Holy Lance during a Unison Attack, the Compound Special Attack will be Fukuin.

The arte is available for Colette after reaching the Tower of Salvation, where she learns it automatically. Kratos will only get Judgment if he is recruited later on in the game after the Torent Forest, in combination with his Cruxis title. In the PS2 version only, Zelos can also learn it as a player controlled character, by using Shining Bind in battle. It will be learned after the battle automatically.

In Tales of the Abyss, Judgment represents the Fifth Fonic Hymn, representing the Fonon of Fire, and can be learned by Tear Grants. The arte is also available to the final boss after he obtains his final form. For Tear to learn the arte, the player must attend a funeral service after clearing the second run through Mt. Zaleho and before the second run through the Absorption Gate. Similar to Symphonia, pillars of light rain down on the field, but the casting time is longer and the arte's element is Fire instead of Light.

Despite being renamed to "Judgment" in Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Legendia, God's Breath has no relation to the actual spell Judgment. This has led to much confusion among the fanbase, some of whom wish to believe that they are variations of the same spell.
