Material Blade (ToS)

The Material Blade as it appears in Tales of Symphonia (PS3 onward).

The Material Blade (マテリアルブレード Materiarubureedo?) is a recurring pair of swords in the Tales series, often dealing combined Ice- and Fire-elemental damage and serving as Lloyd Irving's weapon of choice. The ice blade is known as the Vorpal Sword (ヴォーパルソード Vooparusoodo?), and the fire blade is known as the Flamberge (フランベルジュ / フランヴェルジュ Furanberuju / Furanveruju?). These weapons serve as a component of the Eternal Sword.

Appearances in Original Titles[]

Tales of Phantasia[]

Flamberge (ToP SFC)
Vorpal Sword (ToP SFC)

The Vorpal Sword and Flamberge are an important set of weapons needed to make the Eternal Sword in Tales of Phantasia, after forming a pact with Origin using the Diamond Ring. The swords can be obtained after defeating the guardians of the ancient countries of Fenrir and Odin, while the Diamond Ring is found within the ruins of Thor. These three items form a trinity of ancient artifacts used as a symbol of each of these three centers of political power during Aselia's past, titled the Three Weapons (三種の武具 Sanshu no Bugu?). Only Cress Albane can equip the two blades, but they are considered to be individual weapons which are wielded one at a time. After obtaining the Eternal Sword, both weapons will remain unavailable for future use.

Tales of Destiny[]

In the original version of Tales of Destiny, the Vorpal Sword and the Flamberge, localized as the Burning Sword, appear as separate weapons that can be used by Stahn Aileron, Rutee Katrea, Leon Magnus, Garr Kelvin and Mary Argent. Interestingly enough, the Vorpal Sword is a Wind-elemental sword instead of the usual Water or Ice element.

Tales of Eternia[]

Flamberge (ToE)
Vorpal Sword (ToE)

In Tales of Eternia, both the Vorpal sword and Flamberge appear as separate weapons that can used by Reid Hershel. Despite the Eternal Sword being obtainable after defeating Cress, both blades are unrelated to the Eternal Sword.

Tales of Symphonia[]

Material Blade (ToS) GC

In Tales of Symphonia, the Vorpal Sword is forged by Dirk as his greatest masterpiece ever forged, and the Flamberge is the personal weapon of Kratos Aurion. Both blades are given to Lloyd after the events in Heimdall. Lloyd is the only character in the series who can equip both of the swords at the same time, and his mystic arte, Falcon's Crest, can be performed only with the set equipped. When Lloyd finds the Eternal Sword, it splits apart and fuses with the Material Blade. He no longer uses it in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, having left the Flamberge at his mother Anna Irving's grave as a tribute. However, the swords he does use in the sequel (the Gagnrad) are blue and red, evoking the image of the Material Blade.

Tales of Legendia[]

In Tales of Legendia, only the Flamberge appears, and it can be made at the Customization Shop in Werites Beacon during the Character Quest portion of the game. The sword is a weapon for Chloe Valens. She also obtains the Eternal Sword through the same Customization Shop, but the weapon does not require the Flamberge as a component.

Tales of the Abyss[]

Flamberge (TotA)
Vorpal Sword (TotA)

In Tales of the Abyss, the Vorpal Sword can be obtained through a secret path at Mt. Roneal, and the Flamberge can be obtained through a secret path at Mt. Zaleho. Both of these locations are mountains that evoke the images of ice and fire that their associated weapons represent, due to Mt. Roneal's location within a perpetually frigid climate while Mt. Zaleho is a hellish volcano. Both swords can be used by both Luke fon Fabre and Guy Cecil.

Tales of Innocence[]

Flamberge (ToI)
Vorpal Sword (ToI)

In Tales of Innocence, the Flamberge and the Vorpal Sword appear as two different sets of twin swords, as weapons for Spada Belforma. The Flamberge can be purchased at Sania Village. The Vorpal Sword can be found within randomly instanced treasure chests within Guild Districts 6, 7, 8, and the Forbidden Guild District.

In Tales of Innocence R, the Flamberge is a broadsword, a weapon used by Ruca Milda instead.

Tales of Vesperia[]

In Tales of Vesperia, the Flamberge and Vorpal Sword appear as separate weapons that can be used by Yuri Lowell. Both blades take a significant redesign, with the Vorpal Sword sporting a thin blade and its guard taking the shape of a snowflake and the Flamberge possessing a duller red color with a flame motif inscribed on the blade and an additional section for its guard. Both blades can also be used by Flynn Scifo in the PlayStation 3 and Definitive Edition versions of the game.

Tales of Graces[]

In Tales of Graces, only the Flamberge appears, and it can only be made via dualizing. It is a sword weapon wielded by Asbel Lhant. The Flamberge is also given a unique design on the blade and scabbard to fit Asbel's fighting style.

Tales of Xillia and Tales of Xillia 2[]

In Tales of Xillia, the Flamberge and the Vorpal Sword appear as separate weapons that can be used by Milla Maxwell, taking the design from Tales of Vesperia. They can also be used by Milla in the sequel.

Appearances in Crossover Titles[]

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology[]

The Material Blade appears as Lloyd's weapon throughout the whole game. In Gavada, the player can purchase a Flamberge that looks just like the one Lloyd wields, although depending on the difficulty setting, additional versions of the sword can be obtained afterward.

Tales of VS.[]

The Material Blade appears as Lloyd's ultimate weapon, and the Flamberge also appears as Kratos's second strongest weapon. Lloyd obtains the Material Blade in the final stages of his story mode. Kratos obtains the Flamberge in the final stages of his and Cress's story mode.

Tales of the Rays[]

Material Blade (TotR)

The Material Blade as it appears in Tales of the Rays.

The Vorpal Sword is the weapon that grants Guy the Void Tempest arte while the Flamberge is the weapon that grants Milla the Blaze Shot arte. A corrupted version of the Vorpal Sword seen in Tales of Vesperia is the weapon that grants Alexei Dinoia the Guardian Frost arte. With the introduction of zero artes, the Material Blade reappears as a ★0 gear that grants Lloyd the Aquatic Tempest arte as well as a weapon skin. The Material Blade can also be seen in some mirrage artes, such as Cress using the Vorpal Sword in Hyoushin Kuuhazan or Lloyd and Mithos using both blades separately in Unison Blood.
