Nazamil Hildris (ナザミル・ヒルドリス Nazamiru Hirudorisu?) is a character exclusive to Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn. She is the daughter of the late Lord Urwagil Hildris, and a Dahnan mother. Due to being different, she grew up never accepted by anyone. As a result, her heart is full of resignation.

History[]

Despite being born to a Lord, and having all six elements of Astral Energy within her, Nazamil was raised in complete secrecy and was subjected to constant verbal abuse. If she made a single mistake, Urwagil would yell at her. If any of the few servants who knew about Nazamil looked at her with sympathy, they would be kicked to the curb. This continued for most of Nazamil's life until Vholran Igniseri stormed the household. In that instance, Urwagil demanded Nazamil to kill Vholran, only for the girl to watch as Vholran insulted her father for relying on the power of others to do his dirty work before killing him.

A year after the events of the original game, Dahna and Rena have merged into a New World. Nazamil wanders around, never being able to fit in due to her mixed blood. Eventually, she is chased out of Niez by angry Dahnans, only to run into Alphen and Shionne. Whereas others would just ignore her or hurt her, Alphen and Shionne show her compassion and kindness, something she had never experienced before. She didn't really know how to react to this but nevertheless found it intriguing, if not little terrifying.

Nazamil would soon meet Rinwell, Law, Kisara and Dohalim as well, as the party had agreed to meet at Niez in order to seal off a mausoleum, a vault from Rena where the remaining Helganquil lie dormant, to make sure no one can use the technology inside for misdeeds. Nazamil joins the party but while inside, she touches a console and inadvertently reveals her incomplete crest. Fearful of how the party would react to this, Nazamil turns invisible and escapes deeper into the mausoleum. The party track her to the heart of the mausoleum and after putting down a large zeugle inside, Alphen and Shionne calm her down by revealing their respective Sovereign and Maiden crests. Seeing that the party isn't going to ostracize her, she decides to go with them. Out of suggestion by Baephon, the party take her to live in Viscint.

Although she is accepted to live in Viscint, she doesn't want to be left alone and sticks with the party. The party attempts to track down a zeugle, which is terrorizing Pharia Ranch. Thanks to Nazamil's ability to turn invisible, she is able to track it down and the party defeats it. The party celebrates and Nazamil also heals the ranchkeeper from his mortal wounds by draining astral energy from nearby plants, leaving a puddle of hollowing behind.

The party receives a word, that Niez is under attack by zeugles and they proceed to help. Nazamil takes initiative and takes down a number of zeugles by hollowing them. Although with a noble purpose, Nazamil doesn't realize that Dahnans in Niez have very bad memories about the hollowing due to what Almeidrea Kaineris did to them a year ago. After the attack is stopped, a group Dahnans declare Nazamil a monster and also view Alphen as a traitor for defending her. They try to shoot her but Alphen blocks the shot, getting a wound on his cheek. This sends Alphen into a fury, as he sees anyone trying to harm an innocent as his enemy. Witnessing this scene triggers something in Nazamil. The party leaves Niez and camp out, with Nazamil quietly leaving the party, only leaving a letter behind.

The party searches for Nazamil for weeks. She briefly appears in Viscint, telling the party that soon all will be alright. Later, when Alphen decides to announce the people to just accept him as a person and not a hero, the party goes to Niez. There, they find a number of people wearing masks similar to the one Alphen wore. None of the people seem to be themselves, and Baephon tells the party that a group called Cal Beisel came to town, claiming to bring peace and putting the masks on people. More shockingly, Baephon says the leader was Nazamil. The party goes to Ganath Haros to the location where they said they would be.

The party finds a mausoleum, which serves the Cal Beisel's headquarters. People there are manufacturing the masks, called suppressors, meant to suppress individuals' free will and adopt a pre-programmed personality. The party finds Nazamil. She seems happy to see them and explains that with the masks she can make all the people the same, thus putting an end to all conflict between people, believing it would make the party happy. While the party agrees her motive is noble, her method is wrong as it is no different from tyranny. Failing to understand why the party disagrees, Nazamil tries to put masks on them as well but the party resists. Eventually, Nazamil, unable to accept that her actions were rebuked, attempts to alter reality, and unleashes a barrage of astral energy on the party, hurting them. Seeing her friends hurt by herself, Nazamil becomes shocked and despondent as this was not supposed to happen. She begs for forgiveness but feels she doesn't deserve it. Seeing herself as a monster, she puts on a prime mask that is capable of controlling the minds of all who wear a mask and takes a teleporter to the Keystone, a facility that can control all the mausoleums. The party is unable to follow her as the teleporter was locked from the other side but they manage to get the destination coordinates.

Using another teleporter at Adan Lake, the party follows Nazamil to the Keystone. As they reach the heart, Alphen tells the party that in order to save Nazamil, they cannot be the ones to take off her mask; she must do it herself. The party find her, her mind linked to the Keystone which partially suppresses her own mind. She sees the party not the same and attacks them. The party fight her while also attempting to reach out to her. When they knock her back, the energies of the Keystone heal her and as she proceeds to initiate the final command to the masks, Shionne screams to her that her friends are here and they want her to come back to them. Shionne's words reach her for a brief moment, but then she starts absorbing energy and she ends up inside a monster called Oppressor. The party fights again and still try to reach out to her, holding onto hope since for an instant she did react as herself. Everyone in the party tells her their views and experiences:

  • Dohalim tells her that true peace can only be achieved when every individual accepts each other despite their differences, as differences of people makes the world rich.
  • Rinwell tells her she wants to study magic with her and she also wants her to play with Hootle again.
  • Shionne tells her she understands all too well what it means to be alone, but like just as Shionne managed to find people who accept her for who she is, Nazamil too has found such people.

After putting Oppressor down, it draws even more astral energy to itself, becoming so powerful Nazamil cannot control it anymore. Nazamil can't do anything since she is scared. Alphen then tells her why she is scared; she has never truly known herself as she has always been forced to do what others demanded of her, never having the chance to live according to her own terms. As the party reach out to her one last time, Nazamil begins to regain control. Her friends are there, the joy of her life. The party ask her what it is that she wants. Her answer is that she wants to live. With that answer, Nazamil tears down the walls of her mind, and realizes all she has to be is herself and that no one can tell her otherwise. She takes off her mask and throws it away, feeling true joy for the first time in her life.

The party goes with Nazamil to Viscint where Kisara informs them that all the masks have dissolved, and all those who wore them have no memory of ever wearing them and that the incident will eventually fade from the minds of the people. Nazamil claims she will never forget for what she nearly did. Changing the subject, Rinwell asks her what is she going to do now. Nazamil says she is going to go on a journey all her own as she needs to focus on her own happiness. Staying with the party for now would make her try to make the party happy, which might result something not so good. The party wish her well and remind her that even if they are apart, they will always be her friends. As Nazamil is leaving, she is about to say goodbye, but the word makes her feel sad since it sounds like she isn't going to see her friends again. Alphen comforts her by suggesting she say "See you soon." Feeling better at the suggestion, Nazamil leaves, turns around and says "See you soon!", with the party replying to her happily in same manner.

Appearance and Personality[]

Nazamil is a young girl with silver hair, a blue right eye, and a gold left eye. She wears a white dress with a large blue scarf around her neck, black trousers and white knee-high boots.

Being born as a daughter of a lord, Nazamil always had to act according to her father's wishes, even if she didn't want to. Due to her Dahnan blood, most Renans who even knew of her, would act either indifferently or with outright disgust to her. This abuse left her fearful of anyone. Her Dahnan mother died not long after she was born, which left Nazamil without a mother figure. With no real friends or family to support her, Nazamil never got learn who she truly is.

After meeting with Alphen, Shionne and rest of the party, they start to introduce Nazamil to a world where she could live as herself. Over time her confidence grows and she is willing to use her powers to help others. But when she does this in order to stop a zeugle attack in Niez by hollowing them, she leaves Dahnans there fearing her. After witnessing Alphen's anger towards those who would hurt her, Nazamil finds a determination to make sure nothing like that happens again.

With the determination Nazamil received through her bond with the party, she establishes Cal Beisel and intends to bring about world peace by forcing people to become the same, believing it would make the party happy as all conflict would stop. The party disagrees and she tries to force them too. But when she ends up hurting them, she falls into despair, consciously begging for the party's forgiveness.

When the party attempt to rescue Nazamil in the Keystone, they reach out to her and realize the reason she is scared; due to her upbringing she never really had the chance to know herself and she feared it. With her friends' assistance, Nazamil finally tears down the walls of her mind, revealing her true personality; a kind, compassionate and independent young woman.

Fighting Style[]

With all six elements of astral energy flowing through her veins, Nazamil holds great potential. She can manipulate all six elements and attacks with powerful compound astral artes that combine several of them. During battle, she levitates off the ground with wings of blue energy through her back. She is capable of performing various Water-elemental attacks, and can even cast powerful astral artes in less that a second. She can also manifest shadow weapons based on the Five Lords' weapons and use them for long and close quarters.

Nazamil also has an ability to drain astral energy from other lifeforms and then use that energy to perform powerful healing artes, so powerful she can even heal mortal wounds. But this also leaves the drained life hollow.

Trivia[]

  • Although it is never confirmed in the story, it is possible Nazamil was an experiment to see, if one individual could possess both the powers of Sovereign and Maiden. This is because a Sovereign needed to be a Dahnan and the Maiden a Renan. With Nazamil being of both blood and also having a crest, although incomplete, there is a strong possibility.
  • In Tales of the Rays, Nazamil's default weapon is named "Cauldice".
