Norn (ノルン Norun?) is a mysterious, winged woman who appears before Dio and Mel in the Narikiri House at the beginning of Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon, following the two bringing home a strange creature named Couleur. She reveals to them that they have a "doomed destiny", and will perish unless they complete the Ordeal of Spirits, where they will be tested against the twelve Spirits of Aselia.
Norn assists Dio and Mel through their journey as a guide, often giving them directions on where to go, as well as dictating the "Heroes of Eternity". She often whispers to the heroes in a mystical manner what portions of information they are allowed to tell Dio and Mel. She also allows them to explain the moral dilemmas during their journey in Tales of Phantasia, such as Cress Albane's emotional trauma from having slain Dhaos. Later, Norn protects the party from the ill-minded words of a masked man who relentlessly attempts to break the morale of the children, telling them not to listen to him because his words come only from hatred of life itself. She also protects them from various supernatural attackers, most notably, Dios and Meltia's illusional attacks in the Cave of Chaos.
In Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon, Norn is one of the more powerful enemies in the game, second in strength only to Druaga, and Dio and Mel must fight her without the aid of Couleur. She summons guardians as her normal attack and can follow it up with high-powered spells. She is also capable of both healing and protecting herself with Cure and Teppeki.
- The word Norn, like many names from the Aselian timeline, derives from Norse mythology. A Norn is a creature or deity that is commonly associated with fate, acting as both benevolent and antagonistic toward mortals.
- In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Norn is indirectly referred to by Tenebrae, as being the third Tree Spirit alongside Ratatosk and Martel. Due to how she is the Tree Spirit of a World Tree that was created from Ratatosk's World Tree, Tenebrae remarks that this makes Ratatosk the father of Norn.
