Ox (オックス?) is a minor supporting character in Tales of Rebirth.
History[]
Ox is a Huma resident of Babilograd, where religious influence is heavy due to the Blue Beast Faith, and there is a strict custom that forbids men and women from speaking to each other, apart from within family. When the party arrives at Babilograd, they counter Ox hiding himself in order to speak to Dana (ダナ?), a Gajuma woman. Hilda Rhambling denounces their actions, seeing herself as a victim of racial mixing. Ox then hears someone coming and leaves in a hurry, fearing being seen by the townspeople.
On the western side of town, the party encounters Ox and Dana again, inquiring about a village on the eastern continent where Halfs live. Veigue Lungberg wonders why they would want to know about a place like that, and Ox explains that due to the "teachings and racial conflicts", he and Dana feel there is no place for them left in Babilograd anymore. Hilda interjects at the notion, disgusted at the idea of Huma and Gajuma loving each other, and ends the conversation.
Later, the party meets Dana again, and she explains that there has been a dispute in the city over who would make a better priest, a Huma or Gajuma, despite this never being an issue before. The Huma drove the Gajuma residents to the port and monopolized the temple. Annie Barrs inquires about accessing the summit of the temple's mountain via Climbers' Cavern, but Dana explains that the Huma residents have blocked the road. With Ox being at the top of the mountain, Dana laments over how something like this would happen when she and Ox were planning on leaving the city.
When Dana mentions venturing Climbers' Cavern herself, Hilda tells her not to do it, causing Dana to snap back, telling Hilda that she and Ox are leaving the city because of people like her. Hilda holds her composure and tells Dana to wait for them to get back. The party traverses Climbers' Cavern with the aid of Eugene Gallardo's Force of Steel, then reenters the city and finds Ox. However, in order to operate the lift back down the mountain, the lift manager informs the party they must have permission from the priest, both of whom are being manipulated by Walto of the Four Stars using his Force of Sound.
After the party dismantles Walto's stratagem, Ox and Dana are reunited. Hilda asks if he and Dana still plan on leaving the city, adding that she believes they should stay and serve as hope for those in similar situations, in the same way her parents' appearance "became a source of hope" for her. Dana is surprised at Hilda's change of heart, but tells her she understands and that they will do their best. Hilda then thanks her before the party leaves.
