Rod as it appears in Tales of Vesperia.

The Rod (ロッド Roddo?), also localized as Plain Rod, is a recurring weapon in Tales series. It is usually the weakest staff in titles in which it appears in and serves as a weapon skin for several characters. Its design usually changes between titles but during characters' various Crossover Titles appearances assumes form seen in their users' game of origin.

Weapon Description and History[]

Rod debuted in the Super Famicom release of Tales of Phantasia as the weakest rod exclusive to Mint Adenade that can be bought in present timeline's Morrison's Home and Euclid. The PlayStation release expands on Rod's methods of acquirement: it can now also be bought in the past timeline's Belladem, Euclid, and Venezia City, found in the past timeline's chest in Euclid as an unidentified rod, dropped by Sorceress as an unidentified rod, and also randomly generated by Magic Pouch. The GameBoy Advance release expands on past timeline's shop options by adding Morrison's Home, Hamel, and Alvanista, while removing non-shop methods of getting the weapon.

In the PlayStation release of Tales of Destiny, Plain Rod is a the weakest rod in the game available to Philia Felice and Lilith Aileron that can be bought in Janos. In Tales of Destiny 2, Rod is the initial weapon for Reala that can also be used by Harold Berselius and available in a shop in Darilsheid.

In Tales of Eternia, Rod appears as the initial rod for Keele Zeibel.

In Tales of Symphonia, it is the initial rod for Raine Sage that can also be bought in Triet. In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Raine wields it as her trademark weapon for the majority of the game which in Chapter 8 she changes it to the Crystal Rod.

In Tales of Rebirth, Rod is the initial weapon for Annie Barrs that can be bought in Minal and Petnadjanka. In Tales of the Abyss, Rod appears as the initial weapon for Tear Grants that can also be equipped by Anise Tatlin and can be bought in Chesedonia. In Tales of the Tempest, Rod is a low-rank rod for Rubia Natwick and Arria Ekberg that can be bought in Naliss.

In Tales of Vesperia, the Rod is the mid-rank rod available to Estelle that can be acquired via a chest in Zaude. It comes with the skill Special attached. It can be further customised with the addition of 2 Eggbear Claws, 2 Acorn Helmets, and 12,500 gald into Rod +1 (ロッド+1 Roddo +1?) that comes with the skills Strength 3 and Magic 3 additionally attached.

In Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, Rod is a normal staff for Mages, Priests, and Bishops that can be bought in Ailily on Normal difficulty. In Tales of VS., Rod appears as the initial weapon for Mint, Harold, and Tear. In Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave, the Rod appears Reala's initially equipped weapon.

In Tales of the Rays, there were two variants of Rod: a ★1 weapon but due to the equipment system overhaul as part of 1,000 days of service celebration, it was removed from the game and a ★3 weapon that taught Concentrate to Arria.

Estelle wields the Tales of Vesperia variant of Rod during her crossover appearances, including Tales of the Rays and Tales of Crestoria.
