Sacred Blame (ToD PS2)

Sacred Blame as it appears in the PlayStation 2 remake of Tales of Destiny.

Sacred Penance (セイクリッドブレイム Seikuriddobureimu?, "Sacred Blame") is a powerful mystic arte in the Tales series.

Arte Description and History[]

Sacred Penance (TotA)

Sacred Penance as it appears in Tales of the Abyss.

Sacred Penance first appeared in Tales of the Abyss, where it was found as a Divine Skill, an alternate name for a mystic arte, that belonged to Philia Felice in the cameo battle in the Baticul Coliseum. Sacred Penance is only used by Philia in the Very Hard and Unknown modes of the game and only features in the North American version. The move features Philia rising up against a dark background with what appears to be stained-glass windows, shining with bright light. When she reaches the top, Philia finishes the chant, and waves of energy damage all player characters on the field, also causing knockdown. Damage can be lessened with the Magic Guard skill or the Guardian arte, however. The attack is impossible to completely avoid, hitting the entire field. The arte features a vertical cut-in of Philia as the attack ends. Philia would take the arte with her as one of her Blast Calibers for the PlayStation 2 port of Tales of Destiny.

Sacred Penance (ToV)

Sacred Penance as it appears in Tales of Vesperia.

In Tales of Vesperia, Sacred Penance is the mystic arte of Estelle. It features Estelle rising up against a beautifully colored background, featuring what appears to be stained-glass windows, similar to the version found in Tales of the Abyss previously, but in much brighter colors. Estelle holds her hands together as she rises, similar to praying, and says the beginning of the incantation. When she reaches optimum height, a cut-in of her face will appear, and she will gracefully raise her arms over her head, releasing a large burst of light in the shape of a cross.

The arte damages all enemies on the field and heals all allies. A portion of Sacred Penance, as with the rest of the party's mystic artes, is also used by the final boss during his second mystic arte. After everything else has been performed, the final boss will rise up against a brightly colored background and follow through with everything else exactly like Estelle, with the exception of the incantation. The arte still damages all opponents and retains the healing effect as well.

In Tales of the Rays both Philia and Estelle perform the arte as their crossover mirrage arte.

The name is Sacred Blame in any Japanese release of Tales games that happen to feature the mystic arte, but in any of those localized games, the name is altered to "Sacred Penance". The word penance means repentance: remorse for one's past conduct. While blame certainly has a meaning on the same line as penance, penance has more depth and is considered a holy word. When someone was to receive a sacred penance for their sins, they would kneel before church windows while sunlight was shining through, signifying that the light of God was bathing them in forgiveness.
