Shinten Rekkuu Zankou Senpuu Messai Shinbatsu Kassatsugeki (ToD2)

Shinten Rekkuu Zankou Senpuu Messai Shinbatsu Kassatsugeki as it appears in Tales of Destiny 2.

Tremorous Celestial Sundering Shredding Light of Cyclonic Butchery (震天裂空斬光旋風滅砕神罰割殺撃 Shinten Rekkuu Zankou Senpuu Messai Shinbatsu Kassatsugeki?, "Shaking Sky Fissure Sky Slash Light Whirlwind Destroying Smash Divine Punishment Splitting Kill Attack") and Shinten Rekkuu Zankou Senpuu Messai Shinbatsu Kougeki (震天裂空斬光旋風滅砕神罰攻撃?, "Shaking Sky Fissure Sky Slash Light Whirlwind Destroying Smash Divine Punishment Attack") are two interconnected mystic artes in the Tales series. In Tales of Destiny 2, the former variant represents a "success" in its activation, while the latter is considered to be a "failure".

Arte Description and History[]

These two artes are animated as a series of strikes with varying elemental properties, with each phase of the attack based on the part of the arte name that is called out at that particular time. In Tales of Destiny 2, both artes extend from Shinkuu Kassaijin, and the execution of both artes are identical save for the ending action; Loni Dunamis swings his weapon upward, similar to Raijinshou, for "Shinten" (震天?), then swings it across for "Rekkuu" (裂空?). He then swings it in the opposite direction, generating a wave of light for "Zankou" (斬光?), before thrusting the weapon forward, generating a gust of wind for "Senpuu" (旋風?). Loni tosses his weapon into the air, causing rocks to shoot out of the ground for "Messai" (滅砕?) before leaping upward to grab it as lightning strikes the enemy for "Shinbatsu" (神罰?). A "success" would have Loni grab the weapon, and slam it down to generate an explosive blast for "Kassatsugeki" (割殺撃?), which deals heavy damage, while the "failure" would result in Loni merely punching the enemy for one point of damage for "Kougeki" (攻撃?). The cause of this difference depends on if Loni is able to catch his pole-arm as it drops from the air during his penultimate strike, as a "failure" results from his inability to retrieve his weapon, forcing him to conclude the arte while unarmed. This chance of failure is increased when the "Deck Brush" weapon is equipped. If Kyle is in battle after the end of the failure variant, he will comment how uncool it was.

Tremorous Celestial Sundering Shredding Light of Cyclonic Butchery (ToG)

Tremorous Celestial Sundering Shredding Light of Cyclonic Butchery as it appears in Tales of Graces.

In the PlayStation 3 release of Tales of Graces, only the "success" variant exists in the game, activated after Malik Caesar uses his Accelerate Mode effect "Harsh Lesson". Upon the final strike of this preceding attack, the mystic arte is initiated, in which Malik throws his weapon upward and creates a pillar of light "Shinten" (震天?), before barraging the enemy with green needles for "Rekkuu" (裂空?). He then swings his left arm right, forming several lasers that overwhelm the enemy for "Zankou" (斬光?), before spinning as a cyclone appears, sending them upward for "Senpuu" (旋風?). He then seals them in a giant rock for "Messai" (滅砕?) before summoning a bolt of lightning for "Shinbatsu" (神罰?). Malik lands the final shot by striking the rock with his hand, then turning around to the camera as the rock explodes for "Kassatsugeki" (割殺撃?).

In the Japanese version of the game, an alternative vocal is used randomly when the arte is activated, in which Malik recites the arte name in English as Shake Split Slash Wind Crush Punish Divide End (シェイクスプリットスラッシュウインドクラッシュパニッシュデヴァイドエンド Sheiku Supuritto Surasshu Uindo Kurasshu Panisshu Dibaido Endo?). This feature was removed from the localized version of the game and is referenced in the arte's description in Tales of the Rays. In the Japanese files of Tales of Graces, there is a voice clip of Malik using the failure variant. However, he does not have access to it in the final version of any game.

In Tales of Berseria, Shigure Rangetsu's arte list consists almost entirely of references to the success variant. His Rangetsu Owl Break Soul is his artes chained exactly in the order of the arte name. He ends with one final sword slash, representing the "geki" (?).

Shinten Rekkuu Zankou Senpuu Messai Shinbatsu Kassatsugeki (TotR)

Shinten Rekkuu Zankou Senpuu Messai Shinbatsu Kassatsugeki as it appears in Tales of the Rays.

In Tales of the Rays, both Loni and Malik perform the arte as their Earth- and Fire-elemental crossover mirrage arte, adding both the success and failure variants in the same arte. It starts with Loni launching the enemy into the air while summoning a pillar of fire underneath them for "Shinten" (震天?). Malik then flies past the opponent, damaging them for "Rekkuu" (裂空?). Loni drops from the sky and hit the enemy with his axe for "Zankou" (斬光?). Both Loni and Malik are next seen spinning in front of a tornado for "Senpuu" (旋風?). Malik summons a rock to drop onto the enemy for "Messai" (滅砕?). Loni is then seen with both his feet and head on the ground looking directly at the camera while a bolt of lightning destroys the rock behind him for "Shinbatsu" (神罰?). Malik then summons a beacon that destroys all in its path for "Kassatsugeki" (割殺撃?). Finally, Loni lands a single punch that deals 1 point of damage, parodying "Kougeki" (攻撃?). Similar to Tales of Destiny 2, if Kyle is in the party, he comments how Loni's execution of the arte was uncool at the end of the mirrage arte.

This arte has the distinction of bearing the longest name in Japanese text, amounting to fifteen kanji characters in its "successful" form and fourteen kanji characters in its "failure" form. Due to this long name, the arte is shortened within the menu screen in Tales of Graces, showing the name Tremorous Celestial etc. (シンテ(略) Shinte (Ryaku)?).
