Sonic Spear as it appears in Tales of the Abyss.
Sonic Spear (瞬迅槍 Shunjinsou?, "Instantaneous Rapid Spear"), alternatively Darting Claw (瞬迅爪 Shunjinsou?, "Instantaneous Rapid Claw"), is a recurring lance-based strike arte in the Tales series.
Arte Description and History[]
In its original appearance in Tales of Rebirth, Eugene Gallardo steps forward and slashes his spear in a downward angle directing opposite to the front leg. He repeats this pattern thrice. Eugene reprises this variant of the arte in his later appearances.
This attack motion is simplified when used by later characters, Jade Curtiss in Tales of the Abyss, and Augusto in Tales of Vesperia, to represent a single thrust, reminiscent of Sonic Thrust.
In Tales of Innocence, Ricardo Soldato will hop forward and thrust his bayonet. If the attack connects, he will hop right backward. This trait is carried on in his variant of the arte in Tales of Innocence R, and Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3. In Tales of the Rays, where when the arte connects, Ricardo will hop backward as the banner quickly changes to (跳び退き?).
In Tales of Xillia, Leia Rolando uses a staff-based version, localized as Darting Claw where the last character is replaced by "claw" (爪 sou?), as opposed to the lance-wielders' "spear" (槍 sou?), though the effect is consistent with later depictions of the arte.
