Akisazame (ToD2)

Akisazame as it appears in Tales of Destiny 2.

Sword Rain: Alpha (秋沙雨 Akisazame?, "Autumn Sandstorm"), also localized as Sword Rain and Neo Swarm, is a classic technique in the Tales series.

Arte Description and History[]

Sword Rain Alpha (TotA)

Sword Rain: Alpha as it appears in Tales of the Abyss.

Sword Rain: Alpha is a longer and more powerful version of Sword Rain, in which the user rapidly pierces the target several times, followed by a final strike that may vary depending on the user. This is one of the trademark swordsman artes that appears in nearly every game in the series since its original use by Cress Albane in Tales of Phantasia. In the Game Boy Advance version of the game, Cress finishes with a forward stab instead of an upward one like in many of his appearances. In Tales of VS. and the Radiant Mythology games, he simply performs a jumping upward slash.

With Tales of Eternia, the lower-tier arte Swarm, later localized as Sword Rain, was introduced, which allowed the more powerful Neo Swarm, later localized as Sword Rain: Alpha, to be elevated to a higher status with a greater level requirement. Since then, this preliminary arte has become an important prerequisite for Sword Rain: Alpha whenever both attacks appear together in the same game. In games that lack the lower-tier Sword Rain, such as Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Zestiria, the localization may choose to drop the "Alpha" portion of the name and localize it as just "Sword Rain". Execution-wise, the user performs a leaping upward slash as the final strike, which would be followed by Reid Hershel in Tales of Eternia, Lloyd Irving in Tales of Symphonia, Flynn Scifo in the PlayStation 3 and Definitive Edition versions of Tales of Vesperia, and Sorey in Tales of Zestiria.

In Tales of Symphonia, Lloyd can learn this arte if he is aligned with the Technical style. After mastering this arte, Lloyd will learn Sword Rain: Beta. However, if he is aligned with the Strike style, he will learn only Sonic Sword Rain. In Tales of Legendia, instead of a leaping upward slash, Chloe Valens will temporarily toss her sword into the air before grabbing it and slashing downward, which would be her execution of the arte in later installments. Enough uses of Sword Rain and Sword Rain: Alpha will yield Sword Rain: Omega. In Tales of the Abyss, Guy Cecil uses a backflip kick instead of an upward slash. This arte can be used within a complete Earth or Dark FOF Circle to convert it into Eternal Quake.

In the PlayStation 2 version of Tales of Destiny, after the flurry of thrusts, Garr Kelvin vanishes to the back of the target before performing a final slash as he reappears, which would be his execution of the arte in later installments.

In the original Tales of Innocence, Spada Belforma adds on the leaping upward slash by spinning counterclockwise and performing a second slash. He would later use this version in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3 and Tales of the World: Reve Unitia. In Tales of Innocence R, Spada instead performs an upward cross-slash with both swords.

In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Emil Castagnier simply spins counterclockwise as he performs the upper slash with a short hop. In the PlayStation 3 and Definitive Edition versions of Tales of Vesperia, Flynn can learn this move as an altered arte. He can activate this arte if the Alembic and Chain skills are equipped while using Sword Rain until the arte is mastered. After this, Sword Rain: Alpha is available as a separate arte that does not require the skill to be equipped in order to be used.

In Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X, Dio will perform a powerful forward thrust. In Tales of Graces, this version would also be used by Richard.

In Tales of Xillia 2, this is Leia Rolando and Muzét's linked arte. Both users thrusts forward their weapons before ending with a elongating thrust. In Tales of Arise, Alphen performs an upward slash without jumping.

In Tales of the Rays, Cress, Ras, Lloyd, and Sorey's versions are Water-elemental, while Guy and Richard's versions are Earth-elemental and Alphen's version is Fire-elemental. Enhancing Ras's Akisazame to level 1 allows it to be used in the air. Lloyd's version also alters into Akisazame Honryuu when used as the sixth or later action in a chain while Alphen's alters into Resshousen when standing or moving. In addition, Alphen's upward strike from Arise changes to a downward slam.

In Tales of Crestoria, Reid's Undersea Inspiration unit increases his own ATK by 20% for three turns while Guy's There in a Flash unit is 60% weaker and has no effects but deals one more hit. Sorey's The Dawn's Guidance unit is 45% stronger and deals one more hit than Guy's but has a longer cooldown by two turns while his Sheperd in Black unit is 10% weaker and deals nine more hits but has a much longer cooldown by three turns.
