The Swordsman (剣士 Kenshi?), also known as the Gladiator, is a recurring job class in the Tales series.

Job Characteristics[]

The Swordsman job is known for equipping swords, shields, and heavy armor, and having high physical stats. The Swordsman is usually one of the first obtainable jobs in each game, and in some games are a upgraded form of the Warrior job. Jobs such as the Magic Knight or Great Swordman are considered more powerful variants of the class. Standard artes usually associated with the Swordsman job include Demon Fang, Sword Rain: Alpha, and Rising Phoenix.

Appearances[]

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon[]

The Swordsman costumes are a series of sword-using costumes based on Cress Albane's fighting style. The costumes of this family are:

  • Apprentice Swordsman (みならいけんし 「見習い剣士」 Minarai Kenshi?)
  • Swordsman (けんし 「剣士」 Kenshi?)
  • Skilled Swordsman (けんごう 「剣豪」 Kengou?)
  • Samurai (さむらい 「侍」?)

The first three costumes of this family can be used by both Dio and Mel, but the final Samurai costume is exclusive to Dio. The Swordsman also serves as the basis for further evolutions:

  • Wandering Swordsman (さすらいけんし 「流離い剣士」 Sasurai Kenshi?) is an evolution for Dio
  • Sword Goddess (めがみけんし 「女神剣士」 Megami Kenshi?) is an evolution for Mel
  • Gladiator (かくとうけんし 「格闘剣士」 Kakutou Kenshi?) combines it with the Fighter's self-supportive artes
  • Flame Swordsman (ほのおのけんし 「炎の剣士」 Honoo no Kenshi?) adds fire-based artes
  • Gale Swordsman (しっぷうけんし 「疾風剣士」 Shippuu Kenshi?) adds wind-based artes
  • Holy Swordsman (せいなるけんし 「聖なる剣士」 Seinaru Kenshi?) adds healing-based artes

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X[]

In Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X, Dio's Swordsman archetype is split into two separate branches, each based on the Eastern-style swords used by the Samurai and Western-style swords used by the Swordsman. The costumes of both branches are:

Blade-type (斬刀系 Zantou‑kei?)

  • Samurai (?)
  • Skilled Swordsman (剣豪 Kengou?)
  • Sword Emperor (剣帝 Kentei?)

Sword-type (剣撃系 Kengeki‑kei?)

  • Swordsman (剣士 Kenshi?)
  • Silver Swordsman (白銀剣士 Shirogane Kenshi?)
  • Golden Swordsman (黄金剣士 Ougon Kenshi?)

The Orochi (オロチ?) costume is also an offshoot.

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 2[]

The Swordsman are a series of costumes for both Julio Sven and Caro Orange. Garr Kelvin, Mary Argent, and Ras have their costumes based on the Swordsman costume. Cress Albane's and the Valkyrie's costumes are based off the Holy Swordsman, with Stahn Aileron's being based off the Flame Swordsman, Leon Magnus, the Demonic Swordsman, and Reid Hershel the Berserker. To obtain a swordsman requires giving a costume the Steel Sword (スティールソード?) root item to get the Swordsman of the same element.

The variations are:

Non-Elemental: Swordsman (剣士けんし Kenshi?)
Fire: Flame Swordsman (炎剣士ほのおけんし Honoo Kenshi?)
Wind: Gale Swordsman (疾風剣士しっぷうけんし Shippuu Kenshi?)
Water: Hail Swordsman (氷雨剣士ひさめけんし Hisame Kenshi?)
Earth: Berserker (ベルセルガ?)
Amazoness (アマゾネス?)
(Male only)
(Female only)
Lightning: Thunder Swordsman (雷剣士かみなりけんし Kaminari Kenshi?)
Light: Holy Swordsman (聖剣士せいけんし Seikenshi?)
Dark: Demonic Swordsman (魔剣士まけんし Makenshi?)
Elemental: Skilled Swordsman (剣豪けんごう Kengou?)

Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3[]

The process of costume synthesis is greatly streamlined in Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3, merging all iterations of the Swordsman costume into a single unit consisting of only two gender variants. Julio begins with his Swordsman costume, but Caro must combine her Mimic costume with the root Fencing Manual (けんじゅつしょ Kenjutsusho?) to obtain hers.

Tales of Eternia Online[]

The Swordsman is one of the starter jobs, specializing in physical attack power. The males are modeled after Ras.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology[]

The Swordsman is one of the elite jobs of Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology. In order to get the invitation to become a Swordsman, all one needs to do is become a member of Ad Libitum, at which point the "Swordsman Invitation" is given.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2[]

The Swordsman reappears as a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2, this time as one of the starter jobs that the player can select to be. This job is involved in the requirements to unlock the other sword using jobs.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3[]

The Swordsman reappears as a job in Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3, again as one of the starter jobs that the player can select to be. The job still retains all the artes from the previous installments.
