Synthesis, also known as Customization among other names, is a recurring gameplay element in the Tales series. It is an ability that allows combining various items to create new ones.
Description[]
Synthesis allows to combine two or more items, while usually also spending gald to do so, to craft new items, including weapons and armor.
A similar, yet distinct form of synthesis, is the series' staple cooking.
Appearances in Original Titles[]
Tales of Symphonia[]
In Tales of Symphonia, it is known as Customisation.
Tales of Legendia[]
In Tales of Legendia, it is known as Customize.
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World[]

In Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, it is known as Synthesize (合成?). This title marks the first time in the series when gald is an additional cost when combining items.
Tales of Vesperia[]
In Tales of Vesperia, it is known as Synthesis. As part of the story, the party is tasked with synthesizing a Panacea Bottle, which is notably a different one from the standard Panacea Bottle that can be bought and has different ingredient requirements.
Tales of Graces[]
In Tales of Graces, there is a similar feature called dualization. It is a process where generally an equipment piece is synthesized with an item to create a new equipment piece. However, tools and other types of items can be dualized as well such as food.
Tales of Xillia 2[]
In Tales of Xillia 2, it is known as Custom Order. The strongest non-Devil's Arms-type of weapons can be acquired via Custom Order, however it requires completion of the story.
Tales of Zestiria[]
In Tales of Zestiria, there is a similar feature known as Fusion (融合?), which is a more restrictive variant of dualization from Tales of Graces. Fusion allows the player to combine equipment pieces sharing the same name, increasing their stats with each level.
Tales of Berseria[]
In Tales of Berseria, it is known as Enhance. When the player has sufficient number of required materials and gald, he can increase chosen equipment piece's level by 1, up to maximum of 10, increasing their stats. However, lack of possession of certain acerites limits how many levels can the player unlock and some acerites provide bonuses when the level sum of the equipped gear is met, e.g. Armory Acerite I increases user's maximum BG by 1 if the level sum of all equipment pieces is at least 5.
Tales of Arise[]

In Tales of Arise, it is known as Crafting (作成?). It partially replaces weapon purchases in the game as those are not available for the first time in the series. New crafting options become available as the player progresses through the game.
