Tales of Asteria (テイルズ オブ アスタリア Teiruzu obu Asutaria?) is a social Mobile Title in the Tales series for iOS and Android devices. Its characteristic genre is RPG That Ties Together Intersecting Thoughts (交差する想いがつながるRPG Kousa Suru Omoi ga Tsunagaru RPG?), while Asteria in the title is supposed to mean The Story of the Star (星の物語 Hoshi no Monogatari?). The app utilizes a tap-based battle system called the Cross Slide Battle. The game is split into chapters that are released in episodic format. It was announced on March 16, 2023 that the game would end service on May 18, 2023.[1]

Story[]

Prologue[]

In the ancient times, a mysterious comet enveloped in light fell on this planet. As it fell, it shattered into six different "Star Fragments" (星のカケラ Hoshi no Kakera?), and with those fragments still giving off that mysterious light, they scattered all over the world. Within the Star Fragments lies a mysterious power of choosing those who hold it. They will be tested, and if they can overcome that test, they will be shown its true form. When the time comes, and when the one chosen by fate appears, the Temple of Light (光の神殿?) shall reveal itself. If the one chosen can find the Star Fragment, the path shall then open. When all the fragments are brought together, the guardian of the Temple of Light shall appear to grant all the wishes of that person. This is a legend that has been handed down since the days of old in this world. From children to adults, every single person in this world knows of this "fairy tale".

One day, something happened. At the center of the world appeared a mysterious temple... This seemingly divine temple that just appeared out of nowhere fits the description of the "Temple of Light" in the fairy tale. It was no longer a fairy tale - the legend had become real. With the appearance of the temple, the world's affairs changed drastically. The king of a certain large country firmly believed that he was the chosen one and had started pouring all funds into having his military find the Star Fragments. Another king is trying to place the Temple within his own territory. The world had fallen into a state of restlessness to the point that small wars would occur in many regions. With the shaken world now under the influence of the Star Fragments, the story of the six chosen people now begins...

To access the stories of further chapters, the previous one must be completed to a pertain point.

Gameplay[]

Party Members[]

The battle party consists of five members who can be selected from a party screen. Characters are obtained through events, lottery summons, or after defeating an enemy, with rarer characters being overall stronger. Every character is one of six elements and has an arte that they can use at random during battle, but only a few have mystic artes. Characters are strengthened by using books of experience that can either be of the same element or a general-use, while arte books are used to level up artes, with the possibility of unlocking more depending on the character. Mystic artes are upgraded through repeated use.

Quests[]

Quests are how the play progresses through they story. They require a certain amount of AP to enter, which is lost even if the quest ends in failure completion and recovers with the passage of time or through the use of items. There are storyline quests, special limited events, and subevents that require certain characters to be obtained and then reach certain levels to unlock. The difficulty and dominant element of the monsters encountered is indicated on the quest itself. Completing a quest awards the player EXP that increases their level. Upon a level increase, the player's AP is restored to maximum and may lead to more advanced portions of the game to be unlocked.

Battle[]

Battle is split up into two phases: the "Tap Action" mode and the "Cross Slide Battle" mode. The Tap Action mode is a short action segment where one of the protagonists crosses the screen. As they cross, five monsters will come, and the player must tap the screen as the center of the monster crosses the center of the screen. If they are successful, they will obtain one of three bonuses: immediate healing, an increase in the Overlimits gauge, or an increase in the time limit per turn in battle. If the monster approaches too close, all characters will take damage instead. Getting perfect timing on all monsters grant the party first strike in the resulting battle, which allows a free turn to attack without reprisal.

The Cross Slide Battle mode is the battle segment. At the beginning of each term, several symbols will appear above each location. A red eye represents a position that the enemy will attack at the end of the turn. One of four positive icons will also appears: crossed swords for an increase in damage, a shield for increased defense, a shard for a boost to the Overlimits gauge, and an "Apple Gel" for healing. The main thing to note is the element that appears in a slot: if the character's element matches it, they will perform a series of attacks as opposed to the single strike they otherwise would. A rainbow in that slot means that any character can obtain that boost.

The player has a limited amount of time to evaluate the best way to arrange their party for the turn and then slide their characters into position. Beneath each character is an Overlimits gauge if they have access to a mystic arte. Dealing hits will increase that gauge and, once it fills, enables the character to use their mystic arte at any point in the battle phase. Timing this arte is important, as the party achieves a damage bonus for performing a certain number of hits in a turn, which increases the higher the count. The player can also select items to be used before a turn; these do not take any time, but a limited amount of each can only be used per quest.

The battle is won once the enemy's HP reaches zero, with the possibility of the enemy dropping either than item or a character summon. The quest, on the other hand, is failed if the entire party's HP is depleted. Upon successful completion of the quest, the player will obtain all dropped items and any of three bonuses if certain objectives are achieved: completing the quest in a certain amount of turns, completing the quest with all characters alive, and completing the quest with a mystic arte as the final strike.

Guilds[]

As a social game, players have the option of joining a guild, which provides general bonuses and a shared community. Guild members also have the option of giving each other a gift of Astacoins once a day, which can be used to summon more characters.

Kitty Dispatch[]

Kitty Dispatch (ネコ派遣?) allows the player to send Rollo off for a predetermined amount of time to a location, after which he will return with an item. Purchasable items exist that can speed up Rollo's return time. More areas to explore are unlocked as the player's level increases.

Collaboration[]

Tales of Asteria has had four main collaborations with multiple mobile games in THE iDOLM@STER (アイドルマスター Aidorumasutaa?) series. The first collaboration was with THE iDOLM@STER: Platinum Stars (アイドルマスター プラチナスタース Aidorumasutaa Purachina Sutaasu?), giving costumes to eight characters while introducing idols Haruka Amami and Miki Hoshii as playable characters. The second, THE iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls (アイドルマスター シンデレラガールズ Aidorumasutaa Shinderera Gaaruzu?), added Mika Jougasaki and Uzuki Shimamura as playable characters.

The third collaboration was with THE iDOLM@STER: SideM (アイドルマスター サイドエム Aidorumasutaa Saido Emu?), in which the characters Shiki Iseya and Touma Amagase were released as playable units while giving special idol costumes to eight heroes. SideM then had follow-up event, SIDE OF ASTERIA, in which several of its characters cosplayed the heroes while Luke fon Fabre from Tales of the Abyss and Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia were added as playable idols. The fourth collaboration was with THE iDOLM@STER: Million Live! (アイドルマスター ミリオンライブ Aidorumasutaa Mirion Raibu?), with Mirai Kasuga and Serika Hakozaki serving as the representatives of their game. Eight of the girls from the Tales series received special idol costumes based off the Million Live! costumes.

During the collaboration event with Tales of the Rays, the characters from Rays would occasionally have their mirrage artes displayed as mystic artes.
