Thunder Sword (サンダーソード Sandaasoodo?) is a lightning-based mystic arte used almost exclusively by Lilith Aileron from Tales of Destiny.
Arte Description and History[]
While Thunder Sword existed originally as dummied data in the original Tales of Destiny, along with Lilith herself, it was introduced into the series properly through Tales of Phantasia as one of her two arcane artes used in the exhibition battle that features Lilith as an enemy. In its original design, used in all games prior to the PlayStation 2 remake of Tales of Destiny, the arte features Lilith performing two powerful uppercuts, lifting nearby enemies into the air twice. As Lilith drops to the ground after the second strike, she discharges a blast of concentrated energy that consumes all airborne enemies in front of her.
In the versions of Tales of Phantasia where Lilith appears, it is implied that she learns Thunder Sword by purchasing a book from the woman in Alvanista's Magical Research Lab who sells the Tractor Beam and Thunder Blade spellbooks. In the localized iOS version, the arte banner is blank when this arte is used, but it is localized as Thunder Sword when speaking to the spellbook seller.
In the original Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon for the Game Boy Color, Lilith is again featured as the exhibition battle opponent, reprising her Thunder Sword as an arte that can affect the entire party at once. Due to the graphical limitations of the handheld system, this arte is represented simply as three bolts of lightning that strike each party member successively from front to back.
Due to the complete revision of Lilith's fighting style in the remake to focus on cooking-themed attacks, Thunder Sword remains as only one of only two artes preserved from her previous style. Thunder Sword now incorporates Lilith's new weapon, a frying pan, which shoots a burst of flame upward to lift enemies into the air. She jumps after them and performs a quick slash combo with her ladle before unleashing a blast of lightning that gives homage to its original concept.
