A royal navy fortress spanning the strait between Northgand and Westgand. Its massive gates control passage through those waters.

Vortigern, Sea Gate Fortress (海門要塞ヴォーティガン Kaimonyousai Vootigan?) is a location in Tales of Berseria, the base surrounding the gates of Vortigern that hinder entrance to the Holy Midgand Empire.

Vortigern is a military base that guards the narrow northern sea route between Northgand and Westgand. The fortress consist of two massive archways overlooking the straight, with the second archway containing the main gate itself. The gate is controlled via two switches inside the archway. Several Abbey battleships are said to be stationed here, but all except one were drawn out by the Van Eltia.

Vortigern's main function is to prevent the entrance of daemons and other threats to the Empire, but it also allows the Empire to have a stranglehold on trade from the north. Initially said to be impregnable, the fortress is infiltrated by Velvet Crowe and her team when an outbreak of daemonblight unexpectedly hits all of the guards, allowing them to storm inside among the chaos.

Once inside, they've noticed that one of the battleships didn't leave, and head over there to disable it with explosives. Rokurou Rangetsu encounters an exorcist who fights in a sword style he's familiar with, and after killing him, Rokurou says he now has leads to the whereabouts of the person he's been looking for, Shigure Rangetsu. The group then heads over to the control room to open the gate, where Number Two finds another compass inside. They obtain the key and activate the switches, opening the gate and allowing the Van Eltia to sail to Loegres.

While making their escape, one of the guards turns into a giant daemon and tries to stop them. They defeat the daemonized guard and jump back down onto the Van Eltia as it sails through, with Number Two barely being saved by Velvet in the process. From here on out, Velvet would give Number Two his official name: Laphicet, named after her brother Laphicet Crowe.

  • Like other locations in Tales of Zesitria and Tales of Berseria, Vortigern draws its name from Arthurian legend. It comes from Vortigern, a possibly fictional British warlord who has become associated with Arthurian fiction.
